Flagger

Position Summary

The flagger is responsible for the control of traffic. They are along roads and highways who help traffic keep flowing through a construction zone, despite a shutdown of lanes.​​

Essential Functions

• Discuss traffic routing plans, type, and location of control points with supervisor • Distribute traffic control signs and markers along site in designated pattern • Directs movement of traffic through site, using sign, hand, and flag signals • Warn construction workers when approaching vehicle fails to heed signals to prevent accident and injury to workers • Inform drivers of detour routes through constructions sites • Record license number of traffic control violators for police • Observe safety and security procedures; determine appropriate action beyond guidelines; report potentially unsafe conditions/ use equipment and materials properly • Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned

Education Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required • At least 1 year experience in highway, bridge, sewer, and road construction

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information • Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities • Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented • Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail • Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines • Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary • Ability and willingness to travel as required

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another • Ability to operate job related tools • Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers • Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help • Ability to frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions
