June is Men’s Health Month: Prioritize Your Health for a Stronger Future

June marks Men’s Health Month — a nationwide reminder of the importance of prioritizing preventive care and making informed decisions to support long-term well-being. Far too often, routine checkups and screenings are delayed due to busy schedules or overlooked entirely. However, taking the time for an annual wellness visit can have a lasting impact. Early detection and prevention are key to maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle and ensuring you remain present and engaged — both at work and at home.

Know Your Numbers: A Clear Path to Better Heart Health

Healthcare professionals recommend keeping track of three key health indicators that offer important insight into your heart and overall health: 1. Blood Pressure Often referred to as the “silent killer,” high blood pressure can go unnoticed without regular monitoring. A healthy reading is below 120/80 mm Hg. Keeping blood pressure in a healthy range reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney issues. 2. Cholesterol Levels High cholesterol can contribute to plaque buildup in arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease. A simple blood test during your annual exam can help track and manage cholesterol early. 3. Waist Circumference Waist size is a strong predictor of heart health and metabolic risk. For men, a waist measurement under 40 inches is recommended to help reduce the likelihood of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Physical Activity: A Key Pillar of Wellness

Incorporating regular exercise into your routine is one of the most effective ways to support cardiovascular health. The American Heart Association recommends:
  • At least 140 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, or
  • 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity activity, plus
  • Two days per week of muscle-strengthening exercises
From brisk walking and cycling to yard work and swimming, staying active supports both physical and mental well-being.
